I, for one, am here in a big way for the golden age of atmospheric TV theme songs that we are currently living in.
The opening sequence of HBO’s fantastic Big Little Lies, set to Michael Kiwanuka’s “Cold Little Heart,” is a haunting deconstuction of the big motifs of the series: picturesque coastal California scenery, driving kids to school, vague sensuality superimposed over marine imagery, a gun on the beach, and finally — stunningly — just a straight up fashion show of the main characters dressed in different iconic Audrey Hepburn costumes that they will wear at a benifit gala in the final episode.
